UIUC Academic Senate votes in favor of divestment!

rally 4-4-16After six years of campaigning, the University of Illinois Academic Senate has finally agreed to student demands for divestment from the coal industry! In addition to recommending an official university policy divesting all indirect funds from coal mining and coal utility companies, a resolution was passed that insists upon the creation of a Social Responsibility Committee to investigate the social and financial implications of investments and purchases.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us along the way: our alumni, current members, outstanding student leaders, supporters, advisers, and faculty signatories. This is a monumental victory in the fight against the fossil fuel industry, and we could not have come this far without each and every single one of you.

Beyond Coal will be working with the Urbana-Champaign campus treasury to ensure reinvestment in socially responsible funds, and will continue to advocate for environmental sustainability by campaigning to stop the burning of coal on campus.  Humanity stands now at the crossroads of a decision which will affect our children for generations to come; either we can choose to acknowledge climate change and begin working towards a better, cleaner future, or we can choose to step aside and watch the destruction of our world.

At Beyond Coal, we will not step aside.
